Homelessness is a growing challenge across the UK, and Birmingham is no exception. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit SIFA Fireside, a key organisation providing support and prevention services for people facing homelessness in Selly Oak and the wider Birmingham area. This visit offered a clear view of the pressures on homelessness services and the urgent need for sustainable solutions.

During the visit, I spoke with staff and volunteers who described how rising homelessness is stretching resources thin. The increase in people needing help is linked to broader national trends, including economic pressures and housing shortages. Local services like SIFA Fireside are feeling the strain as funding struggles to keep pace with demand.

The team highlighted the importance of prevention work. Instead of only responding to crises, they focus on stopping homelessness before it starts. This approach aligns with Homeless Link’s Breaking the Cycle campaign, which calls for more investment in early intervention. Prevention helps reduce the long-term costs and human impact of homelessness.

Supporting People in Exempt Accommodation

One of the key areas SIFA Fireside works on is supporting people living in Exempt Accommodation. This type of housing often lacks proper regulation, leading to poor living conditions and exploitation risks. The organisation advocates for better housing standards to protect vulnerable tenants.

By providing advice and direct support, SIFA Fireside helps residents understand their rights and access safer housing options. This work is crucial because stable, decent accommodation forms the foundation for rebuilding lives and moving away from homelessness.

It was a valuable opportunity to see first-hand the breadth of services SIFA Fireside provides and the importance of investing in long-term solutions that address the root causes of homelessness and help people rebuild stability.
