Breaking Barriers: Collaborative Solutions to Address the NEET Challenge for Young People

Every year, thousands of young people find themselves outside education, employment, or training (NEET). This situation creates long-term challenges for individuals and communities alike. Recently, I brought together schools, employers, and local organisations for a roundtable discussion to tackle this growing issue. We shared honest insights about the barriers young people face and explored practical ideas from those working closely with them every day.

While the Government has committed £1.5 billion through the Youth Guarantee, there is still much to do. This post explores the challenges, highlights collaborative solutions, and outlines how local partnerships can create real opportunities for young people.

Understanding the NEET Challenge

Young people who are NEET often face multiple, overlapping barriers that prevent them from progressing. These barriers include:

• Lack of access to quality education or training

• Limited job opportunities in their local area

• Mental health and wellbeing issues

• Transport difficulties
