Attending the recent parliamentary reception hosted by Mondelēz International gave me a unique opportunity to reflect on the rich industrial heritage of Bournville. This historic site within the Birmingham Selly Oak constituency remains a vital part of the local economy. It directly employs around 1,300 people and supports a wider workforce of approximately 4,000 across the West Midlands. The event highlighted how Bournville continues to blend its proud past with a forward-looking approach to skills, apprenticeships, and research.

Bournville’s story is deeply intertwined with the development of industry in Birmingham and the wider region. Founded over a century ago, the site has long been a symbol of quality manufacturing and community values. The reception reminded me that this legacy is not just about history but about ongoing contributions to the local economy and society.
The site’s workforce is a testament to its enduring importance. Employing 1,300 people directly means Bournville remains a major employer in the Selly Oak area. Beyond this, the ripple effect supports thousands more jobs across the West Midlands, showing how a single site can influence an entire region.
I want to say a big thanks to Mondelēz for having me and hosting the reception.
