Al Carns MP

ABOUT ME
I am the MP for Birmingham Selly Oak, elected in July 2024. I was appointed Minister for Veterans and People upon election and subsequently became Minister for the Armed Forces in September 2025.
Before becoming an MP, I served in the Royal Marines for 24 years, earning the Military Cross while serving in Afghanistan. I attended a comprehensive school and joined the military at 19, starting as the most junior Marine and working my way up to the rank of Colonel. I was due to become a 1-star Brigadier General on 10 June 2024 before making the difficult-but important-decision to leave the military and pursue a new agenda for change in politics.
Throughout my distinguished military career, I delivered transformation, but I know that real change begins at the ballot box. Coming from humble beginnings, I want every person and every child in Selly Oak- and across the nation- to have the opportunity to thrive. Essential to this is a growing economy and public services that work for everyone.
My work as MP for Birmingham Selly Oak
As the MP for Birmingham Selly Oak, I work every day to represent my constituents in Parliament and to be a strong voice for the community I serve. I raise local issues in Westminster, scrutinise legislation, and work with colleagues across Parliament to deliver change that improves people’s lives.
In Selly Oak, I hold regular constituency surgeries, support residents with casework, and work closely with local councils, charities, veterans’ organisations, and community groups to address the challenges people face - from housing and the cost of living to access to public services. I am committed to listening, being visible, and making sure that the concerns of Selly Oak are heard at the highest levels of government.
