Access to NHS dentistry has become a growing challenge for many people across the UK. Long waiting times and limited availability of NHS dental appointments leave patients struggling to get the care they need. At Birmingham Dental Hospital and School, conversations with staff and students highlighted the urgent need to address these pressures by focusing on dental education and workforce growth. This post explores how training more dentists and expanding student places can help rebuild NHS dentistry and improve access for communities in Birmingham and beyond.

At Birmingham Dental Hospital and School, I met with staff and students to discuss the future of dental education and the pressures facing NHS dentistry.

We talked about the importance of training more dentists, expanding student places and making sure the NHS has the workforce it needs for the future. It was also great to hear directly from students about their experiences and ambitions.

Dental health is a vital part of overall health, but for too many people access to care has become increasingly difficult. Universities and NHS institutions like this have a crucial role to play in rebuilding that system and improving access for communities across Birmingham and beyond.
