Last week, I had the privilege of visiting The Oaks Primary School in Druids Heath for its first-ever Careers Day. It was an inspiring experience to speak with pupils about the many opportunities open to them and to encourage them to dream big. This event was more than just a chance to talk about jobs; it was about planting seeds of ambition and showing young people that their background does not have to limit their future.

The Importance of Raising Aspirations Early

Events like Careers Day play a vital role in raising aspirations among young people. At a primary school age, children are forming ideas about what they can achieve. When they hear stories of success and meet people from different professions, it broadens their horizons.

At The Oaks Primary School, the pupils were eager to ask questions and learn about different careers. This curiosity is a powerful tool. It means they are already thinking about their futures and what they want to become. Encouraging this mindset early helps build confidence and ambition.

Showing That Background Does Not Define You

One of the most important messages I wanted to share was that a child’s background should never limit their ambitions. Many young people face challenges related to where they come from, but these challenges do not have to hold them back.

By speaking directly to the pupils, I aimed to break down barriers and stereotypes. I emphasised that every child deserves the chance to dream big and the support to make those dreams a reality. This message is crucial in communities where opportunities may seem limited.

The Power of Community Involvement

The success of Careers Day at The Oaks Primary School shows how community involvement can make a difference. When local leaders, professionals, and organisations come together to support schools, it creates a network of encouragement for young people.

This collaboration helps pupils see the range of possibilities available to them and understand the steps they can take to reach their goals. It also strengthens the community by investing in its future.

Encouraging Every Child to Dream Big

The message I left with the pupils was simple but powerful: never stop dreaming big. Whether they want to be scientists, artists, teachers, or politicians, their dreams matter. With hard work, resilience, and belief in themselves, they can achieve great things.

Events like Careers Day remind us all that supporting young people’s ambitions is a shared responsibility. It takes schools, families, and communities working together to open doors and build confidence.
