I recently had the opportunity to visit Bournville Village Primary School after pupils were unable to make their planned trip to Parliament due to motorway disruption. While it was disappointing that the original visit could not take place, spending time at the school proved to be a rewarding experience. Meeting both students and staff gave me a chance to engage directly with young people eager to learn about politics and public service.

Talking About the Role of an MP
During the visit, I shared insights about my role as a Member of Parliament. I explained what inspired me to enter politics and described what a typical day in Parliament looks like. This included discussions about debates, committee work, and meeting with constituents. The pupils were interested to hear how decisions are made and how MPs represent their communities.
Engaging with Curious Pupils
One of the most enjoyable parts of the visit was answering questions from the pupils. Their curiosity and thoughtful ideas about their community and the wider world were impressive. They asked about how laws are made, how MPs balance different opinions, and what challenges politicians face.
This lively exchange showed me how important it is to engage young people in conversations about democracy and governance. It also reminded me that children have valuable perspectives and want to be heard when it comes to shaping their future.
The Importance of Community and Education
Visiting Bournville Village Primary School reinforced the vital role schools play in educating young citizens. Schools are not just places for academic learning but also spaces where children develop an understanding of their rights and responsibilities.
By bringing real-world experiences into the classroom, such as visits from MPs or other public figures, schools help pupils connect what they learn with the world around them. This connection builds confidence and inspires active participation in society.
I want to thank everyone at Bournville Village Primary School for their warm welcome. The staff’s dedication and the pupils’ enthusiasm made the visit a real pleasure. It was inspiring to see such a motivated group of young people eager to learn and engage with important topics.
